El-Rufai Advocates Adequate Funding for NYSC

The Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufa’i, has advocated adequate funding of the National Youth Service Corps to enable it discharge its mandate effectively.

He made the call while speaking to newsmen at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna, shortly after playing host to the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure, who paid him a courtesy visit.

El-Rufa’i said adequate funding of the Scheme would be an investment in human capital, which would go a long way in advancing the unity and development of the country.

He also advised Prospective Corps Members to accept postings to states other than their states of origin so as to achieve the objectives of the NYSC.

During his interaction with Kazaure in the Council Chamber of the Government House, the Governor described the NYSC as a noble Scheme, which should continue to exist, adding that its decades long tradition of uniting Nigeria must be deepened.

He reminisced on his experience as a Corps member in Ogun State in 1980 describing the service period as one that helped greatly in shaping his outlook.

“It was the first time in my life that I realized that Nigeria’s problems were common. We are all struggling with similar challenges; people struggling with challenges of educating their children, paying hospital bills and conquering poverty. That tripod of problems cut across every part of the country.

“Poverty does not recognize ethnicity or religion; poverty targets everyone and most of Nigeria then and now is poor.
“It (NYSC) changed the way I thought about Nigeria. It persuaded me to put Nigeria first before anyone or anything else,” he said.

El-Rufa’i gave assurance that his administration would continue to support the NYSC to succeed.

He further expressed readiness to use the platform of the Nigerian Governors Forum to make advocacy for the sustenance and strengthening of the Scheme.

Earlier, the Director-General, Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure, had expressed appreciation of the cordial relationship and support the Scheme enjoys from the government and people of Kaduna State.

Kazaure particularly thanked the Governor for the various forms of assistance given to the Scheme, including the ongoing general renovation of the Orientation camp.

He also expressed appreciation of the government’s support towards hosting of the 2017 Batch ‘B’ Pre-Orientation meeting in the state.
