Maiduguri — Five female students of the College of Medical Sciences, University of Maiduguri have received scholarship award by Media Trust Limited, publishers of Daily Trust titles.
Delivering the award to the students at the college provost’s office, Bureau Chief of the Maiduguri Regional office of the company, Shehu Abubakar assured the recipients that they will continue to enjoy the scholarship annually until they graduate from the institution.
Those that were given the scholarship are Awa Wasinda Thomas, Zainab Baba Machina, Bintu Buba Umdagas, Fatima Adamu Usman and Asma’u Aminu Lawwal.
Speaking shortly after the award presentation, Provost of the College, Professor Ahmed Ahidjo said the scholarship award to the medical students will go far in encouraging the training of medical doctors for the backward northeast region.
He pointed out that only the University of Maiduguri is graduating medical doctors in the region, adding, “The College is graduating 150 medical doctors annually which is grossly inadequate for the region. That is why you will discover that the northeast is experiencing acute shortage of doctors in our hospitals, a situation worsened by the many years of insurgency that has overstretched our medical facilities and personnel.”
